EVS Volunteers

Volunteering with EVS

Advisors lead or co-lead their assigned projects without direct supervision. Projects usually require 10 to 30 hours. New volunteers typically begin working with EVS by partnering with an experienced advisor. The EVS Program Leader and other advisors are available for support and guidance. Advisors periodically keep the Program Leader advised of the project's status. Once the project is complete, advisors notify the Program Leader, who sends an evaluation form to the organization.

Working with EVS is highly flexible. Advisors can schedule work at times that are mutually agreeable with the client. Most projects require 10 to 30 hours of work, including meetings, document reviews, and critiques over several months. Advisors may refuse any project for any reason, such as vacation or lack of interest in the organization.

Advisors work in person or via electronic means.

  • Experience working with nonprofits as a staff or board member in a leadership role.

  • A good listener, sympathetic, responsive, and "suggests" approaches rather than "dictates" them.

  • Has time to volunteer for a minimum of one project each year.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Interested in keeping leadership and technical skills sharp.

  • Comfortable with email and different forms of online meetings.
