Meet the finalists: 2026 ELEVATE Emerging Leader of the Year

The Emerging Leader of the Year award will be given to a person who has used their passion for philanthropy, personal development and community to engage their peers in a project that has made a positive impact in the community.   

This year’s finalists are making waves across our region, and we’re thrilled for you to join us in celebrating their accomplishments Feb. 21 at United Way’s 8th annual ELEVATE

Here are our six finalists:  

Melanie Allen, CEO and co-founder of Green Loop Marketing:  

Melanie Allen is passionate about creating an economy that supports Hoosiers who live, work, visit and create in Indianapolis. She is the CEO and co-founder of Green Loop Marketing, serves as the board chair of Pattern and volunteers with the Indiana Sports Corp, as the co-chair of the She Creates Sports Summit and the Olympic Swim Trials in 2024 and 2028.  

Her work helps shine a light on Hoosier creatives and the hospitality and sports tourism community in Indianapolis. 

Says Melanie: “Building a successful and sustainable Indy allows us to grow culturally and be a great place to build a life for generations to come.”

Hope Coons, director of community engagement at the Community Foundation of Boone County:  

Hope Coons leads Women of Impact, Boone County's women's giving group, and serves the community through volunteerism and philanthropy both in her job at the Community Foundation of Boone County and outside of it.  

Hope is the foundation’s director of community engagement and got involved there because of her passion for helping those in need and improving the community for those who live there now are for future generations.  

Her vision for Central Indiana is to break down barriers and strengthen partnerships between organizations to better serve Hoosiers.

Marc O’Leary, founder and managing director at Elevate Endurance LLC:  

On your “Marc,” get set, go! A cyclist for 15 years, Marc O’Leary created the Dust Bowl 100, a gravel bike race that gives back to the community, supports local economies and encourages cycling opportunities.  

Marc’s passion is to support small towns that are struggling with declining populations, limited resources, dwindling job opportunities and increased substance abuse. He recognizes the value of close-knit communities, made up of amazing people who deserve support and an opportunity to showcase their talents.

Ephraim Sy Palmero III, program officer with Rural LISC:  

Ephraim Sy Palmero III leads by listening. He serves as a civic leader, aiming to create representation and empower communities.  

Serving as the program officer with Rural LISC, he works to strengthen small business ecosystems, expand food access and support immigrant communities – driven by his commitment to equity and opportunity.  

As an advocate, he hopes to continue to inspire growth in the forms of healthy food options, quality housing, and safe public spaces that support the full diversity of humans. Ephriam’s dedication is rooted in boldly investing in the people of Central Indiana.

Khara Smith, executive director of BU Wellness Network: 

Now the executive director of BU Wellness Network, Khara Smith’s service centers around advocating for access to essential resources, creating wellness-focused spaces and supporting vulnerable communities. 

"Whether I’m organizing, serving, or simply showing up with compassion, I'm dedicated to being present for people who often feel unseen,” Khara says. “Giving back isn't just something I do – it's a core part of who I am and how I choose to impact the world around me.” 

What began as a simple desire to serve has grown into a commitment to creating systems and spaces that uplift, empower and restore dignity for those in need. Everyone deserves access to compassionate, culturally-grounded care, and intentional support can change the trajectory of someone’s life, Khara says.

Maria Yuquilima, transportation and logistics, Indiana Army National Guard; J.D. candidate, Indiana University McKinney School of Law: 

Authenticity, action and a deep commitment to building spaces where others can thrive are the hallmark characteristics of an intentional leader. Maria Yuquilima’s upbringing showed her the value of showing up and pouring into others without judgement. Her background in law has shaped her to be an effective leader who builds communities that trust her for advice, support and representation.  

Her commitment is grounded in reflection, with a focus on those who came before her and those who will come after her. Maria’s vision is to see more leaders who lead with courage, empathy and grit in Central Indiana.
