United Way of Central Indiana hosting CARE-oke fundraiser

Funds raised will benefit United Way’s ReadUP tutoring program

Indianapolis, Ind. July 20, 2021 – To support United Way of Central Indiana’s ReadUp program, Indy residents are invited to show of their karaoke skills by registering for CARE-oke.

ReadUP, a literacy program for third graders, is in more than 25 schools across 15 school districts, charter and innovation school networks in six Central Indiana counties. With more than 650 volunteers, United Way is helping students to get on track, and stay on track, with grade-level literacy.

Those interested in participating can register as a solo artist or as a group, and those living outside of UWCI’s seven-county service area are eligible. The competition is open to all ages, and UWCI asks that all soloists commit to raising $250 and groups commit to raising $500 using our peer-to-peer fundraising tool.

The first step of the competition will take place virtually. Competitors will submit a clip no longer than four minutes showcasing their vocal abilities at uwci.org/careoke. Lyrics of the song selected must be family-friendly, and participants can only use instrumental backings. Submissions are due September 22, and there is a $50 registration fee.

“ReadUP has connected hundreds of students with the one-on-one tutoring support they need to thrive,” said Penny Lee, Chief Fundraising and Engagement Officer at UWCI. “We’re thrilled to host this fun event to showcase Hoosier talent while raising funds for an important cause.”

Online voting to advance to the final round will begin on July 20, with polls closing on September 22. Votes are secured with a $1 minimum donation to ReadUp, and each dollar raised will count as one vote. Those interested can vote for their top choices at https://pages.donately.com/unitedwayofcentralindiana/campaign/care-oke-with-united-way.

Voting is unlimited, and the top performer in each category who earns the most votes will receive an automatic bid to perform in the finale on October 19. The remaining twelve performers will be selected by a panel of celebrity judges and announced no later than October 1.
