United Way leadership, board member development program starts fall session

INDIANAPOLIS – This week, two dozen community leaders will join United Way for the fall session of Leadership United.

United Way of Central Indiana has offered the program – which trains people to serve on nonprofit boards – for over 30 years.

During the three-month program, participants will receive training in fundraising, marketing, finance, legal issues, ethics, and diversity, equity and inclusion related to serving on a nonprofit board. They’ll complete two service projects, tour the statehouse and learn about poverty, the population United Way serves, and the nonprofit’s work in data and research, grantmaking, sector support, equity action and public policy.

Participants also will be matched with one of United Way’s accredited community organizations and serve a six-month fellowship on that nonprofit’s board.

“We’re very excited to be back in person and engaging with our fall cohort in the community and in the classroom,” said Julie Plake, community engagement manager at United Way. “This group is passionate about serving in the nonprofit world and learning how to plug into the community in a meaningful way.”

United Way runs two sessions of the program each year, in the spring and fall. To learn more, visit uwci.org/leadership-united.
