Early Care & Learning

July 2025

Access to affordable, high-quality early care and learning is one of the most powerful levers for disrupting the cycle of poverty and promoting long-term success for children and families. The earliest years of life birth through age eight represent a foundational window for cognitive, social, and emotional development, shaping outcomes in health, education, and overall well-being.

In Central Indiana, too many families face barriers to affordable, high-quality early childhood education. These challenges are particularly acute for low-income families and communities of color. United Way of Central Indiana is working to expand access to early learning opportunities by investing in innovative programs, supporting providers, and advocating for policies that increase affordability, availability, and quality. These efforts are grounded in collaboration with local coalitions, school districts, community-based organizations, and state partners, ensuring that families across our region have the support they need to thrive.

The snapshot below provides an overview of current access to early care and learning in Central Indiana, and highlights the measurable impact UWCI and its partners are making in building a stronger, more equitable future for young children and their families.
