Access to Healthy Foods

July 2023

Access to nutritious and affordable food is fundamental to helping Hoosiers live, work, learn and play. However, more than 190,000 individuals in Central Indiana – including 62,000 children – lack reliable access to food.

When people face hunger, they often struggle to meet other basic needs such as housing, employment and healthcare. No matter the circumstance, the lack of healthy food and proper nutrition can have lifelong impacts. United Way of Central Indiana partners with over 45 organizations to support Hoosiers by addressing food insecurity with services ranging from providing meals, distributing food at local pantries, supporting the creation of community-based food systems in food deserts, and implementing nutrition improvement programs.

The snapshot below contains current data on access to healthy foods as well as the current impact of programs to support individuals and families, as reported by United Way partners in impact.
