Growing up one of 17 children in rural Kentucky, “Randy” was no stranger to hard work. But after a chronic health issue began keeping Randy from performing his service, he was honorably discharged. After that decision, Randy was lost; he didn’t know what his future held.

“Xavier” grew up in a broken home. His childhood was hard and it left him a very reserved, insecure and irresponsible 12-year-old. His mother noticed the path her son was going down, and she knew she needed to do something for him.

Road to recovery brings healing and unexpected friendships
At the age of 57, Russell found himself in his doctor’s office receiving the devastating news many before him have received: he had cancer. To help him manage it all, Russell’s social worker referred him to the American Cancer Society (ACS), a United Way-supported agency.

An energetic group of volunteers met at the offices of Katz, Sapper and Miller to assemble Literacy Kits for On My Way Pre-K programs. This was accomplished in about an hour from 8 – 9 am thanks to the efficiency of our great women volunteers!
