Carey Lykins"For our organization, the decision to participate in ReadUP was based on sound reasoning. The program has well-defined goals, proven processes, and built-in measurements. It’s exactly the kind of community effort that Citizens Gas is investing in today.

For Kathy and me, the decision to become tutors was entirely personal. These are good kids who need help. I hope you’ll join us, as a ReadUP corporate volunteer and as a reading tutor."

Corporate Volunteer Council and United Way:
Working together to help kids read

There’s a clear connection between a confident 4th-grade reader and a
proud high school graduate. United Way of Central Indiana is working to strengthen that connection in several IPS schools. More graduates means
more people qualified for jobs, more customers for the businesses and
fewer young people in the criminal justice system.

Leading the effort

The Central Indiana Corporate Volunteer Council, or the CVC as most
people call it, has made a commitment to ReadUP and to helping more
kids stay on track to graduate. This group of inspired (and inspiring)
organizations is sending their employees into schools as tutors and
into other Indianapolis businesses as advocates for ReadUP.
They’re on a mission – and they’re bringing it to you.

The ask. The support.

Throughout the rest of 2007, members of the CVC will be making
presentations to Indianapolis organizations. They’ll be asking employees
to tutor 4th-graders in targeted IPS schools and they’ll be asking employers
to provide the necessary time off.

It’s a lot to ask, especially in the hard-working, "do more with less" environments of every
organization today. The good news is, the CVC is also there to support employers and tutors with communication
tools and ongoing support from a community of like-minded business leaders and experienced reading tutors.

In other words, you’ll have a lot of help as you’re helping to strengthen our city.

The first step

Jan Diggins of Citizens Gas is the CVC president. She’s the point person for the CVC and can coordinate
a presentation with your employees, your retirees or your executive leadership.
 The process can begin
anywhere. What matters most is where it ends – more 4th-grade readers, more high school graduates,
and a better community in which to grow a business and raise a family.
