How it works
Each volunteer will tutor 4th-graders at an IPS school. Tutoring will take place from October to May, during the school day or after school. Individual (1 hour per week) and partner (1 hour on alternating weeks) tutoring options are available.
Tutors must complete an application, background check and training session. Please allow up to two weeks for the application/placement process.
Businesses and organizations are encouraged to become community partners and recruit employees and members to be tutors. See who's already involved. And sign up today! |
Helping a kid read lifts us all. And that includes you.
What gives our lives meaning? It’s a question asked and answered, again and again, as we move through our lives. We create meaning out of purpose, out of service to others, and even out of our day-to-day circumstances. Indeed, there are moments to create and find meaning all around us.
Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s easy.
You know how difficult it can be to create meaningful experiences within our overscheduled and overworked days. We can unintentionally seal ourselves off from others, from our communities, and from the opportunities to enrich our deeper selves. The good news is we can all step through the seal. The way out: up.
"ReadUP volunteers have made a decision that goes beyond giving their time. In addition to making a difference in someone’s life, volunteers understand that the time they give is transformed into profound personal satisfaction.
I always hear from volunteers how much more they 'get than they give.' To have a positive impact on a child’s life – that’s a powerful experience. I invite you to see for yourself by joining the growing community of ReadUP volunteers."

Step up. And let good work work for you too.
ReadUP is a big idea within a small commitment. The big idea is helping kids as they stand at an academic crossroads. And it’s made bigger by the hundreds of ReadUP tutors doing the same thing. Taken together, it’s all great for the city and that feels good to be part of. But the most immediate rewards of being a ReadUP tutor are also the most personal – sitting side by side with a kid who needs your help with one of life’s most essential skills: reading.
You've read this far.
So there’s probably something here that’s calling you. Maybe it’s that question again, the one about creating more meaning in your life.
Well, go ahead. Answer it.
