A history of commitment

In 1985, business owner Bill Mays and attorney Fay Williams formed the Minority Key Club in order to demonstrate the impact of the contributions of the African-American community. The first year, 11 members contributed more than $13,000.

Today, the Minority Key Club is known as the Diversity Leadership Circle and has expanded to include all diverse populations. As with the Key Club, each member is recognized for pledging $1,500 or more to United Way of Central Indiana each year. Today’s Diversity Leadership Circle boasts 400 members and accounts for more than $1.1 million in contributions.

Diversity Leadership Circle members understand how important United Way’s mission of supporting vital human services in the present while also helping kids succeed in school and beyond, thereby reducing needs for the future. Click here to view a current roster of members.

As the nation’s first United Way minority giving program, the Diversity Leadership Circle serves as a model for similar programs all across the country. With a remarkable record of giving, the Diversity Leadership Circle has exceeded the previous year’s giving every year.

The Diversity Leadership Circle serves as a way for United Way to recognize the minority leaders in our community for their volunteer efforts and financial contributions. United Way of Central Indiana regularly organizes special events and networking opportunities just for Diversity Leadership Circle members. In addition, members are listed in our widely-distributed Community Leaders Book.
