United Way of Central Indiana - Addressing Today's Needs. Reducing Tomorrow's.

READ. TUTOR. MENTOR. Change a child's future.

What?

United Way of Central Indiana believes that everyone can make a difference by volunteering in their community, and that by reading, tutoring or mentoring a child, you can change the future. United Way's volunteer reader, tutor, mentor initiative will mobilize 5,000 new education volunteers in Central Indiana as part of a larger national movement by United Way Worldwide challenging the nation to cut in half the number of high school dropouts by 2018.

Why?

Children who have positive adult role models reading to them and teaching them the importance of education and staying in school are more likely to succeed in the classroom and go on to post-secondary education and a successful career. By getting involved today, you can help change a child’s future.

How?

The Read. Tutor. Mentor. Initiative defines the volunteer roles as:

  • Reader: volunteers read to preschool-age children in a child care setting.
    Be a reader.
  • Tutor: volunteers help school-age children improve their math and reading skills.
    Be a tutor
  • Mentor: volunteers improve a child's social and emotional development in a one-on-one group setting. Be a mentor

For most Central Indiana children, caring adults are the difference between academic success and failure. Be the difference. Just one hour a week is all it takes to impact the life of a child. Can you spare an hour?
