One hour a week is all it takes to change a child's future.

Why?

• Through 3rd grade, children are learning to read. At 4th grade, they must begin reading to learn.
• Two-thirds of Indiana 4th-graders aren't reading at grade level, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
• Research shows that kids who aren't on track with reading by 6th grade are more likely to drop out.

You can help.

Through ReadUP, volunteer tutors spend an hour a week with two students. The program benefits 3rd-, 4th- and 5th-graders, helping them read at grade level and pass the English Language Arts portion of the ISTEP.

In the 2010-11 school year, ReadUP volunteers helped more than 400 students at 17 schools, with some notable results:

• ReadUP 3rd-, 4th- and 5th-graders’ reading assessment scores were, on average, 20% higher than those of non-participants.
• Nearly 50% of ReadUP 4th- and 5th-graders reached grade level in reading.
• 954 volunteers completed nearly 8,000 hours of tutoring for 409 students.
• 99% of students believed ReadUP helped them become better readers. 92% of teachers reported an improvement in participants’ academic performance.

Tutors are needed for opportunities during or after school. Volunteers can choose from options on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays, and from a variety of school sites
and time slots.
